A patchwork man sewn together from corpses and brought to life by arcane means, Frankenstein’s Monster seeks nothing but peace and quiet in a world hell-bent on exploiting him.
It’s Alive
Descendant from an ancient yet controversial family, Victor Frankenstein looks past primitive 18th century technology to successfully animate a semblance of a man he assembles from stolen corpses. When the homely, ungainly creature realizes his own creator shuns him, he avoids Victor’s attempt to destroy him and wanders off into the cruel outside world to find his place in it, for better or for worse.
Power of a God, Body of a Monster
Due to the energies Frankenstein poured into him upon his creation, the Monster possesses superhuman strength, an incredible degree of stamina and constitution, and a high level of resistance to pain. Virtually immortal, he cannot be easily destroyed and, in fact, heals from wounds at rapid pace, though intense cold may slow him down to the point of inactivity. The Monster also exhibits a great reluctance to be near open flames. Magical energies, such as Bloodgem fragments, have sometimes amplified his powers greatly.
Despite his horrific appearance and often violent surroundings, the Monster normally seeks a peaceful existence apart from humanity. He makes friends fairly easily, and enemies infrequently.
Alone in the World
The Monster’s relationships with others remain scant and few and far between, owing to the many times his very existence has been subject to the whims and desires of men and women hoping to use him for their own varied purposes. The Frankenstein family itself stands as a sore point to the Monster, from his creator Victor all the way down to numerous modern-era descendants such as Veronica and Victoria. Each of the Frankensteins encounters the creature in less-than-optimal situations, which often lead to anything from misunderstandings and mischief to outright malice.
Interestingly, the Monster has on occasion felt comfortable among his own kind, the other monsters that inhabit the world, joining groups such as the Legion of the Unliving. In addition, he has also grown close to the Bloodstones, Ulysses and his daughter Elsa, monster hunters who apparently understand and sympathize with him.
No Rest for the Weary
After Victor Frankenstein’s death, the Monster fell into frigid Arctic waters and slipped into a deep suspended animation that lasted until the late 1800s when he was found and revived by the crew of a passing ship. Wanting nothing to do with humanity, the patchwork man nonetheless encountered much adversity over the next several years, including a violent encounter with Count Dracula and having his vocal chords slashed by a female vampire. Mute, he met Vincent Frankenstein who died in a complicated effort to give him a new body, and fell once again into suspended animation in freezing waters until his revival in a 20th century carnival.
Many misadventures for the Monster followed, such as brain-swapping, power struggles between various persons, and the disappointment of false friends. One bright spot in his existence came from a meeting and a bond with monster hunter Ulysses Bloodstone, but such highlights never lasted and he found himself once again in the middle of such events as a battle between the werewolf Jack Russell, AKA Werewolf by Night, and a Los Angeles cult, and a struggle with a strange animal hybrid being known as the Jigsaw Monster.
Flown off to the Swiss Alps to have his speech repaired by Veronica Frankenstein, the Monster encountered yet another Frankenstein descendant, Victoria, and her Children of the Damned at the family castle in Switzerland. Hoping to stay with his fellow oddities, he instead was captured by an insane man called the Monster Maker, who sought the secrets of his power as well as those of John Jameson, AKA Man-Wolf, and Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man. He later aided Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, in a clash with Bram Velsing, AKA Dreadknight, and Spider-Man in adventure involving the mad Dr. Kraft and his quest to form clones from the Monster.
A short period of time followed wherein the Frankenstein creature joined with Elsa Bloodstone to watch over her late father Ulysses’ mystical items and hunt down malevolent monsters. He also brought together Howard the Duck, Jennifer Walters, AKA She-Hulk, Kyle Richmond, AKA Nighthawk, and himself as the “Fearsome Four” to stop a rampaging Ted Sallis, AKA Man-Thing, controlled by the Psycho-Man. Yet another Frankenstein family member required his attention when the Hellfire Club attacked the X-Men with clones that resembled him. He later answered Phil Coulson’s call to join a monstrous iteration of the classic Howling Commandos strike force.
