The super-strong Mary MacPherran, AKA Titania, turns out to be Book’s worst offender. While on a rampage, Titania’s actions injure Book, resulting in a months-long recovery.
Brethren in the Law
Book works at GLK&H under senior partner Holden Holliway and alongside her colleagues, former bouncer turned lawyer Augustus “Pug” Pugliese and Awesome Android, AKA Awesome Andy. When Holliway hires Jennifer Walters, AKA She-Hulk, Book finds every opportunity to manipulate her into becoming She-Hulk, something she agreed she wouldn’t do while working for the firm, use her connections to other Super Heroes, and make fun of her. Suffice it to say, they share a tense relationship despite being on the same side in the courtroom.
Presentation of Evidence
When Book’s offered a job at GLK&H in their office specializing in superhuman law, a first of its kind, she saw it as a chance to go down in legal history.
While defending a criminal, Book went toe-to-toe with She-Hulk in court, who represents the opposition. Book found She-Hulk’s disregard for the legal process appalling when she takes a call from the Avengers during her closing statements. Meanwhile, Dr. Stephen Strange, AKA Doctor Strange, is impressed by Book’s management of the laws of man and asked her to work on another case. The case involved the Ghost of Bailey Briggs, the lead designer for Hammer Aeronautics, who desired to testify against his killer and wrap up his earthly affairs so he could move on to the afterlife.
While working with Walters on the Briggs case, Book had no qualms about using her alter ego to get what they needed. When Briggs put them in harm’s way, Book admitted that she underestimated her usefulness after She-Hulk saved her life.
After she lost her first case while defending Heracles, AKA Hercules, GLK&H expressed their concern about her reputation, which was now tarnished. While defending herself and blaming Walters for her loss, Titania attacked the firm looking for She-Hulk and the destruction of the building that followed injured Book. While the GLK&H building was being rebuilt, Holliway took time off to track down his Super Villain granddaughter, Sasha Martin, AKA Southpaw, leaving the firm in Artie Zix’s hands and the firm began representing Super Villains. Book spent months recovering and even won a case defending villains Frederick Myers, AKA Boomerang, and Raymond Bloch, AKA Ox. Thanks to help from colleague Awesome Andy, she got through her physical therapy. During this time, Andy developed feelings for her, but she, however, was more interested in the man-out-of-his time Matt Hawk, AKA Two-Gun Kid, who had come back from She-Hulk’s adventure with the Time Variance Authority. Although, Andy inadvertently mimics the Eternal Eros, AKA Starfox’s abilities and it influenced Book. Struggling with guilt over how he was manipulating Book, Andy turned his mimicking off, and once Book was restored to normal, she was livid with Andy.
After Book won a case defending Samuel Sterns, AKA the Leader, claiming his criminal acts were all due to gamma radiation, the win brought newfound attention to GLK&H, additional clients, and as such, the partners offered Book a chance to become a senior partner, replacing Holliway. She accepted and the firm updated their name to Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Book.
Book, having grown resentful towards Walters for all the insanity she brought with her, joined a secret cabal, Fourth Wall Enterprises (FEW) whose sole purpose was to destroy She-Hulk and remake her to their own ends. Chairing the group, she put a plan in motion involving the sorcerer Arthur Moore, AKA Dark Art, to get her disbarred, which worked. Getting disbarred left Walters in a bad place mentally but it didn’t stop Book from manipulating her further by representing her in court for her previous actions in violating international borders. She also offered to reinstate her license, though it was all a rouse to get her to forsake her fellow bounty hunter and colleague Jazinda Kl’rt Spawn, AKA Jazinda, a shape-shifting Skrull who was keeping her Skrull identity secret. Though her plan failed, and She-Hulk stood by her friend with the help of her team the Lady Liberators, showing Book the power of friendship. As such, Book forgave Walters and cancelled the She-Hulk project within FEW to the bewilderment of her colleagues.
