An Interpol agent that has little belief in the occult, Sam Buchanan comes face to face with demonic terrors as he protects humanity from the forces of evil. Joining with psychic Victoria Montesi and occult expert Louise Hastings as the Darkhold Redeemers, Sam takes his job of protecting them and others seriously.
Interpol Agent
Sam Buchanan grows up to become an agent for Interpol, and as such receives assignments from the Catholic Church. After Darkhold cultists attack psychic Victoria of the Montesi family, the Church assigns Sam to protect her. The two ally with occult scholar Louise Hastings against cultist Donald Walsh and his Chameleon Worms, who used a Darkhold page to become immortal. After being aided by Danny Ketch, AKA Ghost Rider, and former Ghost Rider Johnny Blaze, the trio remain together in hopes of opposing the Darkholders. Directed by Victoria’s visions, they embark on a series of harrowing adventures to oppose the improper use of the Darkhold which weakens the barrier between Earth and other realms.
Combat Trained
Sam is skilled with handheld weapons and often wields a semi-automatic pistol. He later uses the Exorcist Gun which targets beings of an occult nature. As an Interpol agent, Sam is a capable fighter, skilled in hand-to-hand combat.
Devilish Duels
The creator of the Darkhold, a demonic being known as Chthon, sends his minion Dwarf to offer the tome’s pages up to people as a solution to their woes. The ultimate goal is that when these pages are used, they weaken the dimensional barriers between Earth and his Other-Realm. These pages cause chaos all over the world in the form of horrific fiends and tormenters, which Sam then opposes alongside his Darkhold Redeemers.
He also comes up against the barbaric Monstrosity and using his combat skills, he holds the Darkhold demon back until it stabs Jinx and departs.
Sam reports to high-ranking Interpol agent Randolph DeGuzman, though DeGuzman is secretly the leader of a group of Darkholders. He dupes Interpol into thinking these Darkhold pages were letter bombs, and has the organization collect the letters, hoping to find the Demogorge page, but Sam and the Redeemers thwart and expose him, and he is ultimately slain by his demonic step-daughter, Diabolique.
Steadfast and Supernatural Allies
After receiving an assignment from the Vatican to protect psychic Victoria Montesi, the pair join with occult scholar Louise Hastings and become the Darkhold Redeemers, protecting all of humanity from the dangers of the demonic spellbook.
During their battles and adventures, Buchanan refuses to believe in the supernatural events surrounding him and grows to suspect that Victoria is somehow directing them. He eventually comes around after facing numerous unexplainable foes and does everything he can to protect her and their teammates.
Sam allies with Ghost Riders Danny Ketch and Johnny Blaze, as well as the Midnight Sons. Eventually Louise’s grandson William Hastings, AKA Jinx, and Modred the Mystic join Sam and their Redeemer ranks.
An Agent’s Account
Sam and the Redeemers battled Lilith and her Lilin. Sam then comes upon Aurora Poule who attained beauty through one of the Darkhold’s pages but was raped. She then used a revenge spell that led Chthon’s N’Garai demon spawn to slaughter her hometown of Perfection.
The group then traveled to South Carolina to ally with Sabretooth against the N’Garai, fought Rev. Styge alongside the Frank Castle, AKA Punisher, and joined with Dr. Stephen Strange, AKA Doctor Strange, Wanda Maximoff, Scarlet Witch, and Agatha Harkness against the Pearl Harbor bombing “Memory Spell” of Mr. Haywood.
Meanwhile Sam reported to his superior DeGuzman who he later learned was a Darkholder. DeGuzman masterminded a kidnapping of Victoria. Buchanan rescued her, as the child-demon Diabolique slaughtered DeGuzman and his followers.
Sam then battled the Monstrosity, another Darkhold demon summoned from one of the scattered pages, until it stabbed Jinx and escaped. Though Vicki, empowered by unknown magical means, saved Jinx. When Sam discovered Vicki tapped into the power of the Darkhold, he expressed disappointment in her. Following this interaction he discovered Modred, the Redeemers unlikely ally tutoring Jinx in sorcery. Upset at the notion he attacks Modred but is brought to heel when Jinx defends him. Calling Louise to inform her of the situation, the Dwarf interrupted him. The Dwarf presented Sam with a Darkhold page that would make Victoria love him, but he refused to use it. Around this time the Darklove page was used in Manhattan, briefly unleashing Darklove.
Shortly afterward, Sam and the Redeemers lose Louise to an Lilin-infected Morbius. The team reeled from her loss. It wasn’t long after this tragedy that the team disbanded.
