Over a millennium ago, Amora led Skurge to ally with Asgardian god of mischief, Loki Laufeyson, hoping to trick Loki’s adoptive brother, thunder god Thor Odinson, into releasing Jotunheim’s giants on Earth. Thor overpowered Skurge and drove back the giants. At least twice, Skurge was summoned into the modern era’s relative future by Zarrko the Tomorrow Man: once opposing the Fantastic Four and once against the “Thor Corps.” In recent years, Amora—hoping to seduce Thor at Loki’s request—enlisted Skurge to eliminate Jane Foster, the would-be lover of Thor’s mortal incarnation, Don Blake.
Skurge banished Jane to an extradimensional limbo but was overpowered by Thor. They negotiated to return Jane in exchange for Thor’s mystic hammer, Mjolnir. Enraged at his betrayal, Amora magically assaulted Skurge, forcing him to relinquish Mjolnir back to Thor for protection. Thor returned Amora and Skurge to Asgard, where ruler Odin Borson punitively stripped Skurge of his axe and helmet, and banished him and Amora to Earth. Therethey allied with Baron Zemo as the Masters of Evil in repeated attacks against the Avengers.
The Power of Giants and Gods
Skurge possesses superhuman strength (lifting 65 tons), durability (resisting 0.50-caliber machine gunfire), speed, stamina, healing, and longevity (millennia lifespan), plus athletic agility and reflexes. Skurge has a hunting falcon’s visual acuity. While in Casiolena’s realm, Skurge could also fire energy blasts and enchant prisons. An experienced equestrian and military strategist, Skurge also mastered automatic weapons and learned to pilot Heinrich Zemo’s airship.
Skurge wields a 280-lb, double-bladed axe with a three-foot handle and two-foot-wide blade. Via mental command and directed movements, the axe can cleave spatial and dimensional rifts, allowing teleportation or summoning energy or materials, such as stellar-like heat/light; frigid ice from Earth’s arctic region; destructive blasts; or energy that sapped the Hulk’s gamma-powered strength. Though the axe blade is highly durable, its handle is less so. Skurge’s evil deeds over his lifetime accumulated in his axe, generating a malevolent persona that influences its holders, driving them to violence and evil. Made of “meteorite metal,” Skurge’s gloves are highly durable and enhance his striking force.
Executioner’s Enemies
Skurge’s biggest foes, at least when he works with Enchantress, are Thor and the Avengers. Of course, Amora could also be considered his enemy, as she merely uses him for her devious ends. And he, befuddled by his infatuation with her, must do everything she says.
Cosmic gamesman, the Grandmaster, created simulacra of Skurge and others as his Legion of the Unliving while manipulating the cosmic Death manifestation.
Dishonorable Dalliances to a Change of Heart
Skurge is often used by the Norse goddess Enchantress (AKA Amora) in her evil plans. While she may not count as an “ally” in the traditional sense, they work together several times to fight the Avengers and Thor. They’ve also worked with Loki, Baron Zemo, Wonder Man, Immortus, and the savage Hulk.
When the Enchantress leaves him after the death of Baron Zemo, Skurge changes sides. He joins Thor on a mission to rescue some trapped mortals from Hel, the Asgardian realm of the dead. The Executioner dies a hero, holding back the forces of Hel and giving his allies time to escape. His name is spoken with honor in Asgard because of his heroic sacrifice.
